SCHOOL SCHMOOL 2010/2011:
activist day planner & radical guide
School Schmool is the name of the free activist day planner for students at McGill, Concordia and the wider Montreal community. School Schmool includes engaging articles, resources and practical tools for students and non-students alike to participate in social and environmental justice activism, as well as a useful day planner to organize busy academic and activist schedules. School Schmool is a joint project of the Quebec Public Interest Research Groups (QPIRG) at McGill and Concordia.
This year’s School Schmool, which is free of all corporate advertising, includes three main sections:
- The Issues: More than 20 articles on diverse topics including: Ideas for Starting up a Project; Out of the Classroom and Into the Streets!; Challenging Police Violence and Impunity; Anti-Racism in Action and much more.
- The Groups: A listing and description of more than 50 Montreal-area groups and projects, involved in diverse issues and campaigns.
- The Agenda: A day planner (September 2010-August 2011) – including historical dates and recommended readings – to help organize your life!

———-
School Schmool began in 1994 as a bi-annual publication out of QPIRG-McGill that sought to bring together information, groups, and practical tools of use to all students, but particularly those interested in social justice, equity, and sustainability issues. In the summer of 2006, School Schmool was resurrected as a day planner as well as a socially progressive resource book. The new format constitutes a year-long hands-on guide complete with useful dates (academic and non-academic), current issues, information and resources connecting the McGill, Concordia and Montreal communities and rendering these communities more accessible to students.
One goal of School Schmool is to encourage students to engage with and participate in the issues affecting them as members of both academic and non-academic communities in Montreal. In addition to providing resources and information to this effect, anyone is invited to contribute content, artwork, or editing and layout skills to the production and publication of the organizer. The autonomous collective organizes around this mandate and principles of anti-oppression.

(excerpt from this year’s agenda)
because school schmool is your radical guide to your often unradical school; a preview of groups doing important work in your community; a resource with information on how to get involved, support or start your own projects; an eye-opener to the issues around you; and a place for you to keep track of your busy life…because your life goes beyond the confines of the campus.
academia doesn’t need to be kept separate from real world issues, and we hope that you find a way to bridge this often hard to navigate gap. in 1994 school schmool started as a bi-annual publication seeking to bring together information, groups, and practical tools of use to all students, but particularly those interested in social justice, equity, and sustainability issues. today it is meant to connect the mcgill, concordia and montreal communities, and render them more accessible to students.
we hope this ad-free, non-corporate, autonomous guide will help you locate the struggles you want to engage with, fight for and find support within! whether you need support yourself or want to become familiar with organizing and activism on or off-campus, we’re here to help.
soooooo educate yourself! become a good ally! self-represent! honour people’s struggles and history! and FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT! good luck!!
