Radical Frosh 2011 is seeking workshops, walking/bicycle tours, and facilitators/volunteers for this year’s program!!!

WHAT IS RADICAL FROSH?

Radical Frosh is a 2-day orientation program that is organized by QPIRG-McGill. As an alternative frosh program, Rad Frosh offers both a creative and politically progressive orientation to over 200 + new students. Throughout the weekend, students will be taken on walking tours, bike tours, and bus tours, as well as concerts, panels, film screenings, and workshops that will introduce students to various social, political, and environmental issues, movements, and organizations at McGill and in Montreal. We hope that by presenting a wide range of both educational and recreational activities, new students will have a fun weekend and become familiarized with local social and environmental organizing in Montreal. This year Radical Frosh will take place on Sept 2nd-4th, and we’d love for you and/or your group to participate!

HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED:

  1. GIVE A WORKSHOP OR TOUR! (Deadline for Proposals – July 29th!
    • Workshops and tours are an integral part of the Radical Frosh program. By offering a large variety of workshops, students are able to familiarize themselves with issues, movements, organizations, activities, ideas, etc. that most invigorate them. Tours take place both on and off McGill campus and aim at orientating new students to the city as well, as providing them with a greater social and political context to their new environments with some of its radical and/or underground history. Most tours are walking tours, but bus tours and bicycle tours are also possible! Workshops and tours are also a great way for those in the Montreal community to provide outreach and engage in discussion with new students (who will hopefully become fellow organizers and community members).
    • An honorarium of 150$ will be provided for each workshop or tour, so we strongly encourage both new and experienced workshop animators to apply to participate!
  1. What We’re Looking for in Workshops/Tours:
    • Workshops and walking tours will take place on Saturday September 3rd and Sunday September 4th during the daytime.
    • The content of the workshops and tours should be at an introductory level but we welcome workshops and tours which offer a nuanced level of critical analysis. We are open to a variety of formats, keeping in mind that we are committed to popular education (i.e. workshops must be interactive/participatory).
    • Preferred workshops and tours emphasize organizing on a local level and are critical introductions which focus on ways to incorporate anti-oppression and progressive activism into student’s everyday lives.  We’d also really like to see workshops and tours which include information that’s specifically useful for young people starting out in a new city.
    • Workshops and tours can be in English or French.
    • All workshops and tours should relate to social and/or environmental justice.
    • Each workshop or tour will have up to 30 students.

2. BECOME A FACILITATOR! (Deadline for Applications – August 5th!)

Facilitators are non-hierarchical frosh leaders who are at the heart of the Radical Frosh experience. They are there to make sure that our first-year participants have a fun, educational, and safe time during the program. We need facilitators for the evneing of Sept. 2nd, and all-day Sept. 3rd and 4th. Facilitators will be paired up and be responsible for working with one gropu of new students through the weekend, helping them to navigate the campus and city, answering questions, and more. It’s a lot of fun (some facilitators have told us they had an even better time leading groups then when they were first years in the program), and a great opportunity to learn more about the amazing organizing being done on campus and in Montreal.

Note that all facilitators (both new and returning) are required to complete a MANDATORY facilitator training. Training will take place at the end of August, but there may also be a make-up training closer to Sept. 2nd. Details will be sent to all facilitators after they apply!

If you’re interested, please fill out the application form attached to this email, and return it by August 5th, 2011 to the Radical Frosh 2011 Coordinators, Cera and Adam, at radfrosh2011@gmail.com.

3. BECOME A SUMMER COLLECTIVE MEMBER OR WEEKEND VOLUNTEER!

If you’d like to be involved, but don’t feel up to giving a workshop/tour or facilitating, there are still so many other ways for you to be a part of Rad Frosh (and we’d love to have you)!

If you have new ideas or suggestions on how we can make Rad Frosh awesome this year, then consider becoming part of our summer volunteer collective! We’d like to hear about your ideas for themes, workshops, bands, tours, and collaborate on them with you! We also need help during the summer with several logistical items (i.e. stuffing frosh bags, making t-shirts, picking up food and equipment). Any ideas and help would be greatly welcomed and appreciated!

If you won’t be around for the summer or are not interested in brainstorming and logistics, we still need lots of volunteers to help out during the weekend doing set-up, childcare, whisper translation, cooking with the Midnight Kitchen and more! Let us know if any of these weekend volunteer tasks sound like the right fit for you!
