JOB POSTING: QPIRG-MCGILL OUTREACH AND PROMOTIONS COORDINATOR

The Quebec Public Interest Research Group at McGill University (QPIRG-McGill) is a student-funded non-profit organization that conducts research, education, and action on a variety of social justice and environmental issues at McGill and in the Montreal community. We are looking for a dynamic, approachable, and resourceful person committed to social and environmental justice to fill a one-year renewable 35-hour/week position as Outreach and Promotions Coordinator.

Tasks and responsibilities:

  • Initiating, coordination, and development, alongside other core staff, of QPIRG-McGill’s annual event series (Culture Shock, Social Justice Days, Study in Action, etc), other popular education activities (workshops, film screenings, etc), and other events, and in particular event outreach
  • Organizing volunteer McGill-based recruitment events (Activities Nights, Open House) and regular volunteer trainings
  • Publicizing QPIRG-McGill through posters, newspaper advertising, media outlets, and by networking with campus and grassroots community groups
  • Designing and producing promotional materials (posters, flyers, etc)
  • Maintaining QPIRG-McGill website, listservs, social media accounts and general online presence
  • Organize annual training for the Board of Directors and assist in the organization of the Annual General Meeting of QPIRG-McGill
  • Liaising with McGill and community organizations in Montreal to ensure campus community link, including promoting co-sponsorships and endorsements
  • Communicate and negotiate with McGill University Administration
  • Overseeing QPIRG-MCGill tech needs, including public use computers, printers and so on
  • Liaise with the Student Society of McGill University and the Post-Graduate Student Society
  • Shared responsibility for conducting hiring processes, supervising summer staff and part-time staff alongside other coordinators and Board of Directors
  • Participating in collective office management and administration
  • Shared responsibility for organizing training for Board and volunteers, offering support to the Board of Directors
  • Fulfilling QPIRG’s mandate to function as a resource center by providing resources, referrals, information, training and workshops to QPIRG working groups, and allied student and community organizations

Successful candidates will posses the following:

  • Good understanding of the structure and day-to-day operations of non-profits and/or community organizations (ie. board, staff and volunteers);
  • Excellent knowledge and awareness of political, social, economic and environmental issues;
  • Commitment to the principles of QPIRG-McGill’s mandate and its realization;
  • Anti-oppression analysis and proficiency in applying this to all levels of decision-making;
  • Experience in and commitment to consensus/anti-hierarchical decision-making;
  • Ability to work with a broad range of people and political perspectives;
  • Ability to work both autonomously and with others in a highly collaborative work environment;

Required Skills:

  • Experience with mobilization, activist and community organizing (paid or unpaid)
  • Experience in coordination, project management, and event planning
  • Demonstrated organizational and communication skills
  • Experience working with student and community groups
  • Proven experience developing promotional materials (print and web)
  • Fluent in English with strong English writing skills
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Proven experience facilitating workshops and meetings
  • Familiarity with QPIRG-McGill and the PIRG network
  • Comfort and experience with public speaking
  • Ability to work under pressure and high levels of stress
  • Experience with consensus-based decision making processe.

Assets

  • Excellent ability to write and speak in French
  • Experience with Photoshop & InDesign
  • Strong knowledge of WordPress
  • Familiarity with McGill University, its institutions, and the campus milieu
  • Experience and familiarity with social media for non profits (twitter, Facebook, Instagram etc).
  • Experience with conflict resolution and mediation

Position Details:

Wage: 35 hours/week, $18.61/hour (+ benefits); 1-year contract, renewable; evening and weekend work will be required
