SUMMARY:Continuing Through Stitch: Palestinian Embroidery Workshop
DESCRIPTION:October 24\, 2-4pm at Cité des Hospitalières (Noviciat) \nContinuing Through Stitch: Palestinian Embroidery Workshop is a two-hour presentation and hands-on beginner embroidery workshop exploring Palestinian embroidery as a living artistic practice that connects tradition with the realities of the present.\nThe workshop will begin with a short presentation featuring artwork by Palestinian artist Kawn Bader. Through the work\, Kawn will discuss how traditional Palestinian embroidery can be engaged with as a contemporary artistic language—one that responds to present-day experiences and realities while remaining connected to histories\, memory\, and cultural knowledge. The presentation will consider how embroidery can carry tradition forward while also documenting the present and creating traces that may be encountered by future generations.\nParticipants will then take part in a hands-on introduction to Palestinian embroidery. They will learn basic cross-stitch techniques\, how to prepare fabric and thread\, how to read a motif pattern\, and how to begin stitching a Palestinian geometric motif. The session will include demonstrations\, individual guidance\, time for practice\, questions\, and conversation. No previous embroidery experience is required. \nRegistration link here \nAccessibility: \nCité des Hospitalières is wheelchair accessible.

SUMMARY:Community Dinner + Otros Futuros
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, October 26\, 6-8pm\nSSMU Flex Space (3480 rue McTavish\, room 106) \nAs is our tradition\, we’re kicking off Culture Shock with a FREE community dinner\, on Monday\, October 26th! While the temperature drops\, warm up with a delicious vegan meal (catered by Parc-Ex Curry Collective)\, and hang out with QPIRG and like-minded folks who care about social justice and building real community. \nWe’ll also have:\nA creative circle and speculative card game\, Otros Futuros\nButton-making \nOtros Futuros (Other Futures)\nOtros Futuros (Other Futures) is a speculative card game and creative circle for collective imagination beyond colonial narratives\, designed by Gabriela Franco and Guillermo Schoning. Otros is a Latin American climate imagination movement looking to create and articulate other possible futures that resist capitalist\, imperialist\, extractivist narratives. In a moment when it’s easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism\, the card game invites participants to exercise imagination as a radical act to enact other modes of life\, other possible territories\, other ends to the world and other beginnings for our planet. \nAccessibility: \nThe SSMU Building is wheelchair accessible. There are wheelchair accessible\, single-stall bathrooms on the second and fourth floor.
