DESCRIPTION:Defend Press Freedom: A Thousand Cuts Film Screening and Discussion\n \nMarch 19\, 6:30-9pm at Bar Milton-Parc \nA film screening of the documentary\, A Thousand Cuts\, followed by a discussion. The discussion will cover press freedom and the rise of fascism in the Philippines. Using the Philippines as a case study\, we aim to bring about issues happening in the world and talk about the growing resistance for press freedom in this digital age. \nAbout the film:\n“With press freedom under threat in the Philippines\, A Thousand Cuts goes inside the escalating war between the government and the press. The documentary follows Maria Ressa\, a renowned journalist who has become a top target of President Rodrigo Duterte’s crackdown on the news media.” \nThis event will be 2.5 hours with 1.5 hours used to screen the film. \nThis will be presented by Anakbayan Montreal and the Centre for Philippine Concerns. \nAnakbayan Montreal is a grassroots organization of the Filipino youth students that aims educate\, organize for our right to land\, decent jobs & wages\, education & social services. It is an overseas chapter of Anakbayan Philippines. “Anakbayan” means youth of the nation as we draw inspiration from anti-colonial youth movements before us. \nThe Centre for Philippine Concerns (CPC) is a network of individuals from diverse backgrounds (students\, workers\, academics\, artists\, filmmakers\, etc.) committed to strengthening solidarity ties between Canadians and the Filipino people. As we reach our 40th year\, the CPC continues to support the defense of human rights\, including communities resisting Canadian extractivism and land-grabbing. \nAccessibility \n\nThe space at Bar Milton-Parc is wheelchair accessible.\nThere is a wheelchair accessible and gender neutral bathroom.
