SUMMARY:Panel on Palestine Organizing
DESCRIPTION:Join us on March 27th for a panel on local Palestine organizing. As the Zionist entity continues to bomb Gaza and launch violent incursions into the West Bank\, and with the United Nations Security Council approving a plan for US occupation of the Gaza strip\, it is more important than ever that we build unity and collective power to struggle against complicity here in the imperial core. \nIn this discussion with local organizers\, we will reflect on coalition building\, how the movement has changed in the past few years\, and how Palestinian liberation is tied to other movements\, ultimately moving towards a clearer\, more realistic idea of what genuine “re-building” could look like. \nThis discussion will be moderated by Stefan Christoff. \nStefan Christoff is a media maker\, community activist and artist living in Montréal. Stefan hosts the radio program Free City Radio\, broadcasting weekly on nine community stations in Canada and shared globally as a podcast (Spotify + Apple Podcasts). Stefan makes music with many people globally\, including Anarchist Mountains\, Aidan Baker\, Adriana Camancho\, Aidan Girt\, Lori Goldston\, Nicolás Jaar\, Sessa and Nour Sokhon. Stefan is on the board of the Immigrant Workers Centre in the Côte-des-Neiges district of Montreal\, contributes organizationally to Cinema Politica\, is a regular contributor to Radio AlHara in Palestine and coordinates support for the Sounds of Places residency at The Wonder Cabinet in Palestine. Stefan is also a street artist and works with the Social Justice Centre and is currently a graduate student in history at Concordia University in Montreal. \nPanelists: \nFigs (she/her) is a Palestinian-Lebanese community organizer\, activist who’s an involuntary settler in Tiohtià:ke/Montreal.\nSince the early 2000s\, she’s been involved in different forms of BIPOC solidarity\, most of it for Palestine.\nTo her\, every action is a step closer to living in a free Palestine.\nWhen it’s time\, she wants to be buried under an olive tree there. \nManuel Tapial is a Spanish-Canadian activist\, coordinator\, and social movements researcher based in Montreal.\nWith over two decades of experience in grassroots organizing and international solidarity work\, he has coordinated transnational advocacy initiatives focused on refugee rights\, humanitarian access\, and international justice — including the Spanish campaign Rumbo a Gaza and\, more recently\, the Canadian delegation to the 2025 Global March to Gaza.\nIn Canada\, he works with community-based organizations such as Palestine Vivra\, contributing to public advocacy\, political education\, and movement-building efforts that connect local struggles — from housing justice to migrant rights — with broader international campaigns.\nHis research and organizing focus on the dynamics of popular movements\, sovereignty\, and civil resistance in contexts of displacement and conflict. \nSamar Alkhdour originally hailed from Gaza\, Palestine. In 2016\, she earned the Fulbright scholarship to study International Development at Ohio University in Athens\, Ohio\, USA\, focusing her studies on Women\, Gender and Sexuality. She worked in Gaza as interpreter/translator for eight years in the field of human rights. Samar tirelessly worked to bring her 13-year-old daughter Jana to Canada. Tragically\, just two weeks before the Canadian government informed her that Jana was finally eligible to enter the country in January 2024\, Jana was murdered by the IOF. Devastated by her loss\, Samar channeled her grief into activism\, organizing a daily sit-in outside the office of Marc Miller\, the Minister of Immigration\, Refugees and Citizenship. Her actions sparked broader protests against Canada’s complicity in the occupation of Palestine\, expanding to target other political figures\, businesses and academic institutions that support or benefit from the oppression of the Palestinian people. Samar was subjected to unlawful arrests\, detention\, and police brutality in the past year just for being a voice for justice\, not only honoring the memory of Jana but also shining a spotlight on the complicity of those perpetuating the suffering of her people and other peoples. \nTara Al-Alami is a Palestinian writer and organiser from occupied Jerusalem and occupied Yafa. She is a member of the Palestinian Feminist Collective (PFC). \nAmy Darwish is a Tiohtià:ke/Montreal-based community organizer\, involved in housing\, migrant justice and Palestine solidarity struggles. Over the past decade\, she has been a member of Tadamon\, the Israeli Apartheid Week organizing committee and more recently\, Papineau for Palestine. \nLocation \nSSMU Ballroom\n3480 rue McTavish\, room 301\n6-8:30pm\nDoors at 5:30pm\, panel begins at 6pm. We will have a short break at 7pm. \nAccessibility: \nThe SSMU Building is wheelchair accessible. There are gender-neutral bathrooms on the second and fourth floor.

SUMMARY:Neighbourhood Solidarity
DESCRIPTION:At a time where police violence\, modern surveillance tactics\, and the criminalization of migrants are intensifying\, how do we work collectively to prepare to take care of each other\, communicate with each other\, and organize together? In the face of late fascism and global oppression\, across borders and movements\, it’s more important than ever to build networks to act from and foundations of care that support our shared goals. \nThis workshop provides a facilitated discussion reflecting on the common struggle\, offering practices of collective preparedness and tangible actions that we can take to be stronger together locally in the face of broad structural oppressive factors. We will be discussing neighbourhood solidarity groups as a form of resistance. This includes knowing your neighbours and supporting them when police/anti-immigration procedures/landlords are at their doors\, alternative communication methods\, and mutual aid food and resource projects. \nJoin us for this crucial workshop on March 24th at 5:30pm! \nArts Building\, W-25 \n853 rue Sherbrooke O \n5:30-7:30pm \nAccessibility: \nThe Arts Building is accessible by wheelchair via the Leacock Building (855 rue Sherbrooke O). There are accessible bathrooms on the ground floor of the Leacock Building.

SUMMARY:Mapping Extraction
DESCRIPTION:This workshop maps extraction as a political and environmental process of the capitalocene\, tracing how projects framed as development or sustainability- by bringing together cases from India\, Palestine\, and Alaska- reorganize land and life through colonial or racial power. Rather than proposing reformist solutions\, the workshop opens space to revisit environmental possibility by questioning what kinds of futures these projects make possible or foreclose. \nThe core of the session will center on examining 3 case studies\, followed by a discussion guided by questions of the ontology of environmental “injustice” and the role of capital accumulation in shaping what counts as environmental “good.” Participants will collectively explore what a critical environmental politics might require us to refuse\, and what sort of knowledge could guide alternative environmental responses. \nAttendance is limited to 20 participants. Register on Zoom here. \nJenan Afaneh (B.A. University of British Columbia\, M.A. Birzeit University) is a writer\, researcher\, and educator. They are interested in tracing the multiple and shifting realities produced by colonialism\, across time\, space\, and social life.

SUMMARY:WHERE I COME FROM THE GROUND IS RED
DESCRIPTION:WHERE I COME FROM THE GROUND IS RED\nWith Mak Ékoué \nWHERE I COME FROM THE GROUND IS RED is a slow\, attentive\, creative workshop – an exercise in bearing witness to the life of land beyond human intervention. Using simple writing to share intimacies with strangers and create space between wounds\, participants will first share personal experiences and collectively read from a selection of poetic provocations. What follows will take different shapes as each will formulate a response\, process a piece of trauma\, or simply explore a musing in creating a paper zine. We will conclude with a zine exchange. \nMak Ékoué is an artist and design researcher born and raised in Tiohtià:ke (Montréal). Specifically interested in explorations of queerness\, radical care\, and material cultures as they pertain to urban contexts\, all spheres of their work revolve around ideas of memory\, archival\, and cultural references. Their artistic practice\, primarily composed of poetry and zine-making\, is largely comprised of writings about the cherished people\, and multitude of sacred places\, that have cradled them thus far. \nThursday\, October 30th\, 6-8pm\nLeacock 210 (855 rue Sherbrooke O) \n Accessibility: \nBuilding is wheelchair accessible. SUMMARY:“Severed” Screening hosted by In Pain and Insane
DESCRIPTION:“Severed” Screening hosted by In Pain and Insane\nOn October 29th\, in recognition of two years of Israel’s relentless genocide against Palestinians in Gaza\, as well as National Disability Awareness Month in the so-called U.S. and Disability Employment Awareness Month in so-called Canada\, In Pain and Insane invites you to a screening of the powerful\, new\, short documentary Severed. Severed follows Mohamad Saleh\, a Palestinian teenager from Gaza who lost his leg at only 12 years old\, and has survived five Israeli military assaults. In those attacks\, he lost his home\, close family members\, and best friends. Mohamad’s story is both deeply personal and emblematic of the thousands of Palestinians disabled by Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza. \nThis is an opportunity to center Palestinian voices\, deepen understanding of the genocide\, and build solidarity between Palestinians and the larger disability justice community. \nTogether\, we can take action on disability justice and Palestine. \nWednesday\, October 29th\, 6-8pm\nQPIRG Concordia\, 2100 rue Guy Suite 205 \nAccessibility:\nMask mandatory event; free masks will be available at the entrance to the space. \nFor step-free access\, use the entrance at 1625 de Maisonneuve Ouest. \nBuzz #0205 to be let through the automatic doors\, then take the elevator up to the second floor. DESCRIPTION:Keynote Address with Ellen Gabriel\nFREE event\, with registration: REGISTER HERE. \nJoin us for a keynote address from the renowned activist and artist\, Katsi’tsakwas Ellen Gabriel. \nThis year\, QPIRG-McGill and SSMU External Affairs are exploring the theme of Land in relation to liberation\, decolonization\, and environmental justice. Land is at the core of our struggles – from resource extraction and the climate crisis\, to housing and homelessness\, to borders and imperialism. The Land provides water\, energy\, food\, and life. It roots the resistance of Land defenders blocking forestry in Nehirowisiw Aski just as it moves the resistance of Palestinian children throwing rocks at the Zionist occupation. From migrants navigating an imperial border imposed upon Land to unhoused community members criminalized for occupying Land\, this year’s event series\, Culture Shock\, challenges us to reject that Land is an object of capitalist possession\, and recenter it as the root of our struggle. \nEllen Gabriel is an activist\, artist\, and educator from the Kanien’kehá:ka Nation\, known for her central role as spokesperson during the Kanehsatà:ke Siege\, also known as the Oka Crisis. She has won numerous awards for her most recent book\, When the Pine Needles Fall. \nFriday\, October 24th\, 7:30-9pm \nMacdonald Harrington G-10 \nAccessibility: \nMacdonald Harrington is wheelchair accessible. To access the building from Roddick Gates (entrance to McGill campus from rue Sherbrooke O)\, go north on the main path\, follow the path on the right towards the Frank Dawson Adams Building (3450 rue University)\, and enter using the west entrance. SUMMARY:Panel on Migrant Justice
DESCRIPTION:Panel on Migrant Justice\nJoin us for an in-depth and important discussion on migrant justice\, led by organizers working with speakers from Centre d’aide aux familles latino-américaines (CAFLA)\, the Immigrant Workers Centre (IWC-CTI)\, and the Migrant Justice Clinic (CJM). This event will explore the lived realities of migrants navigating a province shaped by colonial borders\, systemic racism\, and increasingly hostile immigration policies. \nThe panel will begin with an introduction to the speakers and their organizations\, offering insight into the work being done on the ground. The heart of the conversation will center on critical questions such as: How are migrant communities organizing in the face of structural barriers? What challenges do they face? And how are state policies\, such as Bill C-2 and growing anti-migrant rhetoric\, impacting their everyday lives? \nWe will explore intersections between migrant justice and other social movements\, asking how solidarity can be built across struggles for Indigenous sovereignty\, workers’ rights\, climate justice\, and more. \nWhether you are a long-time ally or just beginning to learn about these issues\, this is a space to listen\, ask questions\, and reflect on what it means to be in true solidarity with the migrant community. \nAbout the speakers: \nGuarav Sharma (IWC-CTI) \nSince 1997\, Gaurav Sharma has been a driving force in Chandigarh theatre (India)\, using his artistry to advocate for women’s empowerment\, labor issues and social change. His extensive portfolio includes directing plays and films that shed light on pressing social issues\, including the Punjabi opera Yaddan/Memories (Sala Rossa\, 2024) and the revolutionary play\, Ram Mohammad Singh Azad/Celebration of Independence of India (Sala Rossa\, 2025). With the Immigrant Workers Centre\, Sharma performs street theatre and workshop leadership on labor rights issues in Parc Extension\, in particular the South Asian community. He has been a worker at Dollarama warehouse\, and a key player in the IWC’S Dollarama warehouse campaigns. \nThere will be a free dinner served after the event! SUMMARY:Gaza as a Compass for Thinking
DESCRIPTION:Keynote lecture by Dr. Alia Al-Saji\, professor of Philosophy at McGill\nGaza as a Compass for Thinking: A decolonial philosophy of debilitation and resistance in colonial duration\nSeventeen months into the genocide in Gaza\, our philosophies remain for the most part either silent or complaisant\, seemingly unable to think with a contemporaneous reality that would shake many of its presuppositions and theoretical tools. This is a colonial duration in which genocide continues to snowball—during the current ceasefire—through disease\, cold\, exposure\, starvation\, untreated injury\, and the debilitation of the infrastructure for healthcare. Refusing the application of pregiven frameworks\, I ask what an anticolonial/decolonial and feminist philosophy that accompanies and affectively registers this reality may be. What is it to take Gaza as the compass for thinking. What might it mean to resist and refuse the inevitability of this colonial duration. Drawing on concepts of qahr (suffering\, oppression)\, ashla’a dismemberment)\, shaheed (martyr\, witness) and sumud (steadfastness)\, found in Palestinian\, Arab and Muslim thinking—and on thinkers from Fanon to Shariati\, Azoulay\, and Meari—I reconfigure an approach to philosophy that might begin to do justice to Palestine. \nBio: \nAlia Al-Saji is Professor of Philosophy at McGill University. Al-Saji’s work brings together phenomenology\, critical philosophy of race\, and feminist theory\, with an abiding interest in questions of time and affect. She has published extensively in critical phenomenology and on the philosophies of Henri Bergson\, Maurice Merleau-Ponty\, and Frantz Fanon\, most recently: “Touching the Wounds of Colonial Duration: Fanon’s anticolonial critical phenomenology” (Southern Journal of Philosophy\, 2024). Her recent work extends Critical Disability Studies in colonial contexts\, notably in: “A Debilitating Colonial Duration: Reconfiguring Fanon” (Research in Phenomenology\, 2023). \nRSVP here \nVegan meals will be served at the end of the event! \nMasks are strongly recommended for this event. N95 masks will be available at the door.

SUMMARY:Inappropriate Content: Censorship in Prison Mailrooms
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Prisoner Correspondence Project \nThe Prisoner Correspondence Project is a solidarity project for gay\, lesbian\, transsexual\, transgender\, gendervariant\, two-spirit\, intersex\, bisexual and queer prisoners in Canada and the United States\, linking them with people a part of these same communities outside of prison.  \nSince its inception\, one of the most significant barriers that the project has faced is the censorship of information and speech by prison mailrooms. Even the most benign materials–a form to fill out to be matched with a pen pal\, or a list of free resources available from our library–have been flagged by prison staff as threatening to the security of the prison\, and rejected. Repressive mailroom policies have direct consequences on the wellbeing of people inside\, who are denied access to lifesaving information about harm reduction and gender/sexuality\, or to handwritten letters from loved ones. \nIn this workshop\, we will learn about some of the ways prisons use censorship as a tool of control–including through emerging technologies such as digital mail processing systems–\, and how this affects prisoners; and will explore some methods of resisting censorship from the inside and the outside. \nQPIRG-McGill (3516 Av du Parc) \nAccessibility: \nThe library space at 3516 is partially accessible – there is a ramp to the front door\, but the door is not automatic. SUMMARY:Home is Where Public Transit Is
DESCRIPTION:Climate Justice Montreal\nIn this workshop\, we will discuss how economic\, physical and social access to public transit shapes the way we live and defines our home. We will also discuss the role of public transit for unhoused communities and the way it could act as a sanctuary space. For many of us\, especially in disadvantaged communities\, public transit is not only a means to get from one place to another; it also determines where we can live and work\, and the way transit routes are designed maps our entire lifestyles\, placing limits on where we can establish a place to call home. How could we make public transit more harmonious with a radical vision of what home is in terms of relationships\, care and community? How could we transform public transit spaces to better serve our needs in terms of housing and living? \nQPIRG-Concordia (2100 rue Guy\, #205) \nAccessibility \nThe QPIRG space itself is wheelchair accessible. \nThere is an elevator in our building. There are two entrances. SUMMARY:Drylongso: Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Regards Noirs\n(1998\, 1 hour 26 minutes\, 4k restoration) \nA rediscovered treasure of 1990s DIY filmmaking\, Cauleen Smith’s Drylongso embeds an incisive look at racial injustice within a lovingly handmade buddy movie/murder mystery/romance. Alarmed by the rate at which the young Black men around her are dying\, brash Oakland\, California\, art student Pica (Toby Smith) attempts to preserve their existence in Polaroid snapshots\, along the way forging a friendship with a woman in an abusive relationship (April Barnett) and experiencing love\, heartbreak\, and the everyday threat of violence. Capturing the vibrant community spirit of Oakland in the nineties\, Smith crafts both a rare cinematic celebration of Black female creativity and a moving elegy for a generation of lost African American men. (Criterion) \nDirected by Cauleen Smith. \n7080 rue Alexandra\, #506 \nRSVP at the link here

SUMMARY:Eviction: Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:with Director Mathilde Capone\nSince 2010\, Parthenais has held within its walls the life of a whole queer community. They are gay\, lesbian\, trans\, and they live together in Centre-Sud in the heart of Montreal\, in a triplex that is falling apart. Between the parties that sometimes welcome more than two hundred people until the wee hours of the morning\, the collective dinners\, the great joys and the small despairs\, this old flat has transformed the lives of its tenants. Twelve years later\, the building is bought by a wealthy family who wants to live there\, gentrification being the order of the day. This marks the end of a mythical space that has transformed Montreal’s queer scene for a decade. The boxes are too small to contain all the stories that have taken place within these walls. EVICTION is the story of this turning page\, as the distraught residents search for a new place to call home in the midst of a housing crisis and land speculation. \nRead more \n(2023\, 1 hour 30 minutes)\n3475 rue Peel \nAccessibility \nUnfortunately\, the theatre space at 3475 rue Peel is not wheelchair accessible.
