SUMMARY:On Refugees\, Palestine\, and Talking Back: Film Screening and Discussion with Mahmoud Zeidan
DESCRIPTION:On Refugees\, Palestine\, and Talking Back: Film Screening and Discussion with Mahmoud Zeidan\n \nJoin QPIRG-McGill in collaboration with Mahmoud Zeidan\, an expert on the grounds in Palestinian Refugee camps in Lebanon\, for the screening of “Nahr el-Bared Talks Back”\, followed by a conversation on refugee camps\, refugees talking back\, and Palestine. The screening will take place in the Critical Media Lab\, in Peterson Hall\, Room 108\, from 5:30-7:00. Refreshments will be provided. \n“Nahr El-Bared talks back” depicts the story of the camp. On 20th May 2007\, fighting broke out between the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) and a new militia group calling itself Fatah al-Islam based in Nahr el-Bared\, a Palestinian refugee camp near Tripoli\, North Lebanon. After 15 weeks of intense bombardment\, the camp was reduced to rubble\, and more than 30\,000 residents made homeless. Despite plans to rebuild the ruined camp\, the displaced families live under dire conditions and face an uncertain future. In Nahr el-Bared Talks Back\, the displaced refugees narrate the fearful story of the camp’s destruction\, the dangers of being under siege\, their fateful escape\, and their hopes of one day returning. But most of all\, Nahr el-Bared Talks Back is the tale of Palestinian families losing their most valuable assets – home and community – in the face of chronic uncertainty. Mixing original footage shot in the camp with the refugees’ own voices\, this film is the inside story of a humanitarian disaster that shocked Lebanon and made international headlines.

SUMMARY:An Intro to Technofeminism - How to Use (And Critique) Tech for Social Good
DESCRIPTION:An Intro to Technofeminism – How to Use (And Critique) Tech for Social Good\n \nPresented by: Laine McCrory \nGiven the rapid pace of tech\, it can be easy to get lost in the shuffle. As Big Tech corporations promote their motives\, ordinary people are often ignored. In this workshop\, participants will learn about what it means to build technology for social good. You will learn about the fundamentals of critiquing AI\, algorithms and data\, with a goal of demystifying the “black box” around tech. Participants will also help imagine what building tech from the “ground up” looks like. Join us to learn more about data justice and technology for the people! \nLaine (she/her) is finishing her undergraduate degree at McGill University\, and will be starting a Masters in Women and Gender Studies at University of Toronto in the Fall\, where she will be researching feminist data justice principles. She is currently writing a thesis exploring the issues with techno solutions narratives in smart cities. Laine has also researched the sociopolitical implications of the AI industry in Montreal\, and is a research assistant with the Just Feminist Tech and Scholarship Lab.

SUMMARY:The KAIROS Blanket Exercise
DESCRIPTION:The KAIROS Blanket Exercise\n \nIn 1996\, the Aboriginal Rights Coalition worked with Indigenous elders\, Knowledge Keepers\, and educators to develop an interactive way of learning the history most Canadians are never taught. The KAIROS Blanket Exercise was the result; an interactive and experiential teaching tool that explores the historic and contemporary relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in so called Canada. It has since been offered thousands of times and the fourth edition was released in 2016. \nDuring this 2 to 3-hour workshop\, participants step on blankets representing the land and into the role of First Nations\, Inuit and Métis peoples. They are guided by trained facilitators\, including Indigenous Elders and Knowledge Keepers\, who work from a script that covers pre-contact\, treaty-making\, colonization\, resistance and much more. Participants read scrolls and respond to cues in the script. The KBE concludes with a debriefing\, conducted as a talking circle\, during which participants discuss the learning experience\, process their feelings\, ask questions\, share insights\, and deepen their understanding. \nENTRANCE A\n2100 Rue Guy\, #205\n\nENTRANCE B (step free)\n1625 Boul de\nMaisonneuve W\nBuzz #0205\n\nThis event is free\, but registration is required. SUMMARY:My Puzzle is Your Sound: Field Recording
DESCRIPTION:My Puzzle is Your Sound: Field Recording with Joey Zaurrini\n \nWe spend our days and nights immersed in the soundscapes of our environments. All too often\, this rich tapestry of sensory information goes unnoticed and forgotten unless the sounds are particularly disruptive. In this workshop\, we will learn to use active listening and field recording as grounding tools that connect us to our bodies and open acoustic portals into everyday environments. The workshop will include guided soundwalks\, listening exercises\, field recording ventures\, journaling and sharing with the group. Borrowing from Hildegard Westerkamp’s words\, we will use the recorder as an extension of the ear\, capturing sounds to then investigate and listen to together. During the workshop\, participants will be taught active listening techniques and methods of expressing these listening experiences through the creation of soundmaps. This will serve as an introduction into the practice of field recording and the mindfulness benefits that can be obtained from it. \nThe workshop will be a single session with a duration of 2 hours. The maximum participant capacity is 5 as there are limited recorders available. To register\, email info@qpirgmcgill.org. \nJoey Zaurrini is an artist whose mediums span from paint to sound. He studied Electroacoustics at Concordia University and went on to Simon Fraser University to complete an MFA in Interdisciplinary Fine Arts\, where he created an online interactive sound map\, Tales From the Square\, as his graduating project. He is passionate about creating accessible and engaging workshops for everyone to learn about field recording. SUMMARY:Decolonizing Healing & Medicine\, Re-imagining Community Care: Keynote with Dr. Ayesha Khan
DESCRIPTION:Decolonizing Healing & Medicine\, Re-imagining Community Care\n \nFrom mental health crises to COVID-19 and chronic illnesses– capitalism/ colonialism are making us all sick in different ways and destroying the planet at large. We’ve been taught to think about our health & wellbeing in a vacuum. Our health is tied to the health of our community\, the land\, flora\, fauna & every part of our ecosystems. We’re part of nature\, not separate from it. How do we address our distress through a political\, collectivist lens and step away from individualistic\, pathologizing\, colonial\, profit-driven models of “healing”? What do we need to truly be healthy and how can we build those networks of interdependence & mutual care? How can we take care of the land so it may care for us? \nJoin us for a discussion with Dr. Ayesha Khan (@wokescientist) on decolonizing healing & medicine\, and re-imagining community care. \nMarch 10\, 5pm-7pm with hybrid option on Zoom. The keynote will be live streamed in person in Room 150 of the McGill Arts Building (853 Sherbrooke Ouest). \nRegistration link: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/559785883647 \nThis event is part of our week-long event series\, Spring into Action\, which will take place from March 10-22. Stay tuned as we post more events this week! Visit the link here to learn more: https://qpirgmcgill.org/spring-into-action/ \n………..

SUMMARY:Sundance Harvest presents: How to Farm in Community
DESCRIPTION:Sundance Harvest presents: How to Farm in Community\n  \nDate: Sunday\, February 26th\, 2023\, 2pm-4pm \nLocation: QPIRG-Concordia (#205-2100 rue Guy) \nRegister here: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/how-to-farm-in-community-with-sundance-harvest-tickets-537990824037 \nIn this interactive and very hands on workshop you will dive into what farming in a community looks like from the cooperative\, collaborative and community land trust lens from the past and present day. You will create a blueprint of what your own community farm can look like either as a career to make a fair income for yourself and workers such as Sundance Harvest or on a different scale. We won’t be speaking about just vegetables! Mushrooms\, herbalism\, livestock and much more will be covered. Everyone has a role to play in community and you will learn how to troubleshoot common communication issues\, land access\, capital startup\, infrastructure build\, simple crop plans and of course how to figure out what part of a forest you really are? \nThis is the ideal workshop to come to if you know you want to grow with the land\, and you know it’s best to do that in community. \nThis is not a lecture! You will be moving and grooving around the room in a form of a circuit. You will be able to socialize\, brainstorm and at the end of the workshop have a definite plan for your next steps along with crucial resources provided. \nHosted by Cheyenne Sundance\, the owner and farm director of the living wage certified and 3 acre farm Sundance Harvest. \nhttps://www.sundanceharvestmarket.com/ \nSundance Harvest grows food and farmers year round. The Sundance Harvest Market Farmer Incubation program is the only one of it’s kind in Ontario. With programs such as CRAFT and FarmStart disappearing in south-western Ontario\, there is a deep need for a full and immersive incubation program that isn’t just a plot of land. Our program goes into the deep of it. All our Market Farmers have access to: up to 1/4 ac of organic farmed land\, cold storage\, compost\, seeds\, seedling equipment\, irrigation kits\, water access\, heat access\, dry storage\, landscape fabric\, caterpillar tunnels\, greenhouse space\, marketing\, crop planning guidance\, branding and zero lease cost. This is all included in the $5\,000 one time cost or is free for the Black Business and Farm Incubation Program that got funded through a Fundrazer we held this year to allow true equity. One of the most well known pieces of the farm is the Indigenous land stewardship work we have been doing in collaboration with other nations and our Market Farmer Incubation Program (which is 100% funded for the Black Biz and Farming Incubator arm so participants can grow and learn for free) \nThis event is supported by QPIRG-McGill\, QPIRG-Concordia\, Frigo Vert\, and Divest McGill.

On February 14th 2023\, join us for a Memorial and March for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women\, Girls\, Trans and Two-Spirit People in Tiohtiá:ke (Montreal). Too many Indigenous families have lost their loved ones to colonial violence. Many Indigenous women\, girls\, trans and Two-Spirit people wonder if they will be next. This can’t go on. In 2019\, the Final Report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls was published (https://www.mmiwg-ffada.ca/final-report/). Now is the time to take action. To honour the recommendations on how to stop the genocide against Indigenous communities. We refuse to allow the countless hours of testimony and knowledge that thousands of Indigenous people poured into the inquiry go to waste. We have all the information we need. Let’s join to mobilize and honor the lives of those who are no longer with us. It’s an opportunity to learn from activists and elders\, and to be inspired to action by the songs and performances of Indigenous artists. This event is organized by the Iskweu Project: (a project of the Native Women’s Shelter of Montreal) that aims to reduce and ultimately eradicate the number of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls (including trans and Two-Spirit). Montreal. SUMMARY:ALL MY RELATIONS: Indigenous Crafting\, Culture\, and Connection
DESCRIPTION:Culture Shock presents:\nALL MY RELATIONS: Indigenous Crafting\, Culture\, and Connection\nNov. 24th\, 1:00-3:00 PM\n3516 Av du Parc\, 1st floor\n\nThe Indigenous Support Worker Project (ISWP) and Pierre Parent will be bringing in crafters from Inuit and native communities to carve soap and make dreamcatchers on-site for two hours. Country food\, such as caribou\, will be served. Community members are invited to experience the ways that spaces for Indigenous art practices bring unity\, a sense of purpose\, connection\, and joy. Pierre will also give a one-hour presentation discussing his own life experience and Indigenous realities and culture.\n\nABOUT THE FACILITATORS\nAs Indigenous people supporting Indigenous people\, the ISWP is a harm-reduction based organization that uses experiential wisdom to build meaningful relationships and innovate solutions within the Indigenous Street Community. By meeting Indigenous people experiencing homelessness where they’re at\, the ISWP is able to support safer substance use and provide access to physical\, emotional\, and cultural health resources.\n\nTheir primary goal is to build and maintain collaborative social relationships that contribute to Indigenous healing from intergenerational trauma and colonial violence. Their role is to model\, support\, and create opportunities for Indigenous resilience and wellbeing — within an Indigenous Harm Reduction framework.\nPierre Parent is a 52-year old Anishnawbe outreach worker. As a result of a lifelong battle with trauma and addiction\, he wound up serving 10 years in federal prison. After becoming fully immersed in his culture and traditions with the Indigenous Elders who visited the prison\, he facilitated an Aboriginal Peer Educational Coordinator initiative. Now a writer\, public speaker\, and social justice advocate\, Pierre has been developing peer initiatives with the local Indigenous Street Community since April 2020.\n\nCulture Shock is an annual event series on anti-racism\, migrant justice\, and Indigenous solidarity. SUMMARY:Places of Rest: An Interactive Mapping Experience
DESCRIPTION:Culture Shock presents:\nPlaces of Rest: An interactive mapping experience\nNov. 22nd\, 1:00 – 4:00 PM\nLev Bukhman Room (203)\, University Centre (3480 rue McTavish) \nIn this workshop\, participants are invited to reflect and share places within the city that trigger memories of joy and pleasure. Our intention is to create a map of Montreal which features the places of rest BIPOC have found here. From these depictions\, we will produce a document which can then be shared to other BIPOC students who are yet to come to the city. The lack of places to rest for BIPOC in the city are almost always intertwined with problems of safety and accessibility. This exercise highlights the way that we continue to navigate spaces that are not necessarily built for us\, but that we can make our own nonetheless. \nWe want to ask individuals to do three things;\n– Draw a map to the place/s\n– Express a memory of this place\, in whatever form suits the memory best\n– Name the place\, this can be formal\, casual\, or imagined \nSpaces of rest in the city are also located in our imagination. Sometimes we daydream about places we wish we were at\, or had\, to feel safe and rested. We will also invite participants to share their imagined spaces which they believe should exist or have\, over time\, ceased to. \nMahika Gautam & Angel Quadry are architecture students\, of Indian and Nigerian decent\, born and raised in London. Much of our work\, as the children of immigrants\, focuses around these topics of space production and who has the right to the city. In this way\, this workshop acts as a way to decolonise space\, and ensures that we acknowledge the importance of individual relationships to the city. \nCulture Shock is an annual event series on anti-racism\, migrant justice\, and Indigenous solidarity. It seeks to bring together racialized communities to discuss issues relevant to their lives\, as well as to allow those who do not belong to these communities to learn more about struggles against racism\, colonialism and border violence. SUMMARY:Nightlife as Community Building
DESCRIPTION:Culture Shock presents:\nNightlife as Community-Building: A panel discussion\nNov. 21st\, 7:00-8:30 PM EST on Zoom\nRegister here: https://us02web.zoom.us/…/tZ0oc… \nFrom vogue balls to fundraiser parties\, bar nights\, drag shows\, and strip-karaoke\, nightlife spaces and events have always been a site of connection for queer and gender-nonconforming communities. Montréal in particular is known for its thriving party scene\, and the same people and places that create those ephemeral spaces have also been intertwined with the history of political activism in the city. Past and present\, it is impossible to discuss the successes\, challenges\, issues\, and realities of our communities without acknowledging the contribution of the people who organize\, perform at\, and attend our nightlife events. \nJoin us for a discussion with established organizers about their experiences and philosophies for building community networks through their work. Panelists will include Cuartababy (CRZN)\, Camellia Jahanshahi (Lust Cove)\, and Marlyne Lust (Sweet Like Honey). Moderated by Adrienne Pan (Grind’her). \nCulture Shock is an annual event series on anti-racism\, migrant justice\, and Indigenous solidarity. SUMMARY:Rad Frosh 2022: Reaching Across\, Reaching Towards
DESCRIPTION:Rad Frosh 2022: Reaching Across\, Reaching Towards\n \nRad Frosh is a three-day long alternative orientation to McGill University and Tiohtià:ke (Montreal) during the weekend of August 26 – 28 organized by QPIRG-McGill. This unique experience will give you the chance to get to know activist and community groups on campus and beyond\, while also introducing you to more social justice issues. We have a schedule packed full of fun\, workshops\, food and so much more! Some of the weekend’s activities include a dance party\, radical guided tours\, workshops\, a karaoke night\, and a drag show! We can’t wait to have you! \n\nThis year’s theme is “Reaching Across\, Reaching Towards”\, thinking about how we can each help grow healthy\, long-lasting activist communities. When dreaming of what these communities can look like\, we imagine reaching across generational divides to connect with the knowledge and experience of activist elders. We imagine reaching across different activist communities\, across borders and prison walls to learn from and build solidarity with those whose struggles are both similar and different from us. We begin to question the lines that separate different “social issues”\, and see the ways that they are all connected to each other. When we reach across these divides\, together we can begin to reach towards our collective future\, realizing our dreams of peace\, freedom\, and justice for all. \n\nLearn more about this year’s Rad Frosh
