SUMMARY:PANEL: History & Current Struggles in Prisons in Canada
DESCRIPTION:This panel is an introduction to both historical and current anti-carceral work\, with representation from people with lived experience as well as organizations that work towards abolition. We seek to offer a broad overview of abolitionist work by mapping out connections between different struggles\, from solidarity with sex workers\, to prisoner justice\, to police abolition\, to pan-Africanism.  \nSpeaker bios TBA. \nPrisoners’ Justice Day is an annual day (August 10) memorializing the people who have died in prison the previous year; this tradition started in Millhaven prison (Bath\, ON) in 1975\, with 11 demands\, including the right to meaningful work with fair wages\, to vote\, to open visits and correspondence\, and more. \nThis event will kick off our programming series for Prisoners’ Justice Day\, which culminates with a vigil on August 10th at Parc Vinet. Check out our Instagram (@pjd___mtl) or qpirgmcgill.org/pjd/ for more information on our other programming. \n\nCette table ronde propose une introduction aux luttes anti-carcérales\, tant historiques qu’actuelles\, avec la participation de personnes ayant une expérience vécue et d’organisations abolitionnistes. Nous souhaitons offrir un large aperçu du mouvement abolitionniste en établissant des liens entre différentes luttes\, de la solidarité avec les travailleuses du sexe\, à la justice pour les personnes incarcérées\, à l’abolition de la police et au panafricanisme. \nBiographies des intervenants à venir. \nLa Journée de la justice pour les prisonnier·ère·s est reconnue chaque année le 10 août. Cette journée commémore les personnes décédées en prison l’année précédente.
