We spend our days and nights immersed in the soundscapes of our environments. All too often, this rich tapestry of sensory information goes unnoticed and forgotten unless the sounds are particularly disruptive. In this workshop, we will learn to use active listening and field recording as grounding tools that connect us to our bodies and open acoustic portals into everyday environments. The workshop will include guided soundwalks, listening exercises, field recording ventures, journaling and sharing with the group. Borrowing from Hildegard Westerkamp\u2019s words, we will use the recorder as an extension of the ear, capturing sounds to then investigate and listen to together. During the workshop, participants will be taught active listening techniques and methods of expressing these listening experiences through the creation of soundmaps. This will serve as an introduction into the practice of field recording and the mindfulness benefits that can be obtained from it.<\/p>\n
The workshop will be a single session with a duration of 2 hours. The maximum participant capacity is 5 as there are limited recorders available. To register, email info@qpirgmcgill.org.<\/strong><\/p>\n Joey Zaurrini is an artist whose mediums span from paint to sound. He studied Electroacoustics at Concordia University and went on to Simon Fraser University to complete an MFA in Interdisciplinary Fine Arts, where he created an online interactive sound map, Tales From the Square, as his graduating project. He is passionate about creating accessible and engaging workshops for everyone to learn about field recording.<\/p>\n Accessibilit\u00e9<\/strong><\/p>\n Nous passons nos jours et nos nuits immerg\u00e9s dans les paysages sonores de notre environnement. Trop souvent, cette riche tapisserie d’informations sensorielles passe inaper\u00e7ue et elle est trop vite oubli\u00e9e, sauf si les sons sont particuli\u00e8rement perturbants. Dans cet atelier, nous apprendrons \u00e0 utiliser l’\u00e9coute active et l’enregistrement sur le terrain comme des outils d’ancrage qui nous relient \u00e0 nos corps et ouvrent des portails acoustiques dans les environnements quotidiens. L’atelier comprendra des promenades sonores guid\u00e9es, des exercices d’\u00e9coute, des enregistrements sur le terrain, un journal et une session de partage en groupe. En empruntant les mots de Hildegard Westerkamp, nous utiliserons l’enregistreur comme une extension de l’oreille, capturant les sons pour ensuite les \u00e9tudier et les \u00e9couter ensemble. Au cours de l’atelier, les participant.e.s apprendront des techniques d’\u00e9coute active et des m\u00e9thodes pour exprimer ces exp\u00e9riences d’\u00e9coute par la cr\u00e9ation de cartes sonores. Il s’agira d’une introduction \u00e0 la pratique de l’enregistrement sur le terrain et aux b\u00e9n\u00e9fices de la pleine conscience qui peuvent en d\u00e9couler.<\/span><\/p>\n L’atelier sera une session unique d’une dur\u00e9e de 2 heures.
