Co-organized by QPIRG McGill, QPIRG Concordia, GRIP UQAM, and Le Frigo Vert

Date: Jan 24th at 6pm

Location: QPIRG Concordia (2100 Rue Guy, #205)

In 1996, the Aboriginal Rights Coalition worked with Indigenous elders, Knowledge Keepers, and educators to develop an interactive way of learning the history most Canadians are never taught. The KAIROS Blanket Exercise was the result; an interactive and experiential teaching tool that explores the historic and contemporary relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in so called Canada. It has since been offered thousands of times and the fourth edition was released in 2016.

During this 2 to 3-hour workshop, participants step on blankets representing the land and into the role of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. They are guided by trained facilitators, including Indigenous Elders and Knowledge Keepers, who work from a script that covers pre-contact, treaty-making, colonization, resistance and much more. Participants read scrolls and respond to cues in the script. The KBE concludes with a debriefing, conducted as a talking circle, during which participants discuss the learning experience, process their feelings, ask questions, share insights, and deepen their understanding.

About Anti-Colonial Week

Join us for Anti-Colonial Week, a grassroots initiative that’s been evolving since its humble beginnings as the Anti-Colonial Dinner in 2015. Now, in 2024, it’s a week-long exploration of food, film, and resistance. Created for Concordia students and the wider community, this event is all about education and awareness, digging into the real impacts of colonization on communities and weaving connections with social and environmental movements.
This year’s lineup includes From Palette to Plate, a hands-on food/art workshop, The KAIROS Blanket Exercise for a profound historical experience, and Plantcestors, a workshop on plants and herbs. Immerse yourself in films, engage with speakers, and participate in workshops that unpack the realities of colonization. It’s not just a week – it’s a movement!
