Recognizing misinformation in the age of social media: approaching the news with a critical, anti-imperial perspective

with CUTV Montreal
March 15th, 6-7:30pm at Le Frigo Vert @lefrigovert

This workshop will look at issues of misinformation and the negative impacts of it, break down how to be aware of it, and go over journalists’ methods for fact checking while researching. The workshop will also look at examples of coverage in Canadian media that is tainted by things like zionism or imperialism, how the use of language can affect the way a story is told and interpreted, and how to be cognizant of this type of coverage so that we can be careful while reading a story and before resharing it.

This workshop will be hosted by Local 514 host and journalist Savanna Craig. Local 514 is a biweekly web series produced by CUTV Montreal, a grassroots community television station. Local 514 covers local social justice issues and critique decisions by municipal, provincial and the national government(s). Savanna Craig researches, writes, hosts and edits Local 514 alongside a team. She is a freelance journalist focused on issues covering imperialism, housing and more. She graduated from Concordia’s journalism program in 2020.

This event is part of our week-long event series, Spring into Action, which will take place from March 10-22. Stay tuned as we post more events this week! Visit qpirgmcgill.org/spring-into-action to learn more
