This workshop will cover the history of Women of Diverse Origins and the grassroots women’s movement in Montreal/Tio’tia:ke. Women of Diverse Origins has been organizing International Women’s Day activities, including the main IWD demonstration in Montreal since 2001. We have joined together as women from different communities making the connection between our situation in Canada- Turtle Island, and issues in our countries of origin, from war and militarism to forced migration and exploitation of migrants, to violence against women here and globally. We have organized forums, conferences and yearly demonstrations to make us visible and to affect awareness and change.
During this workshop, this history will be shared, with lessons drawn from organizing over the years. We are looking to engage young women and women-identified persons to join us in continuing to build a militant, grassroots, women’s movement in Montreal-Tio’tia:ke and the world. This 2-hour workshop will be for knowledge transfer and to exchange views and examples of organizing in our communities. We encourage students to get involved in our activities!
Women of Diverse Origins (WDO) is a grassroots anti-imperialist women’s network that organizes public events to educate, discuss and empower! WDO-FDO -Femmes de diverses origines, organizes the yearly demonstration on International Working Women’s Day in Montreal on March 8. https://wdofdo.wordpress.com/ We are also a founding member of International Women’s Alliance, made up of some 100 organisations in 20 countries.
