Supporting prisoners and parolees in their transition as returning citizens

“Every year, thousands of people are released from prisons on parole. In most cases, they return to the same social conditions that led to their criminalization in the first place – or even worse conditions.”
For this workshop, we want to focus on sustainability when supporting prisoners and people on parole. We would like to highlight 3 essential tools to bolster ex-prisoners’ chances of success as returning citizens. We refer to this as the D.S.D (drive, support and discipline).
We are committed to supporting our returning citizens who are now subjected to serving long-term/life sentences. This would essentially mean they will often serve decades in prison before eventually serving the remainder of their life sentences in the community. Supporting lifers means being in it for the long haul. This workshop will talk about the basics of life sentences, statistics around who ends up in prison, and what the parole process is like. We will then focus on supporting our returning citizens in these situations through fostering drive, support and discipline networks.
Programs that boost self-worth, in order to enhance these returning citizens’ drive for success.
Programs that create an environment where they feel inclusivity and support.
Programs that create a routine that vicariously create discipline.

The workshop will be hosted by Christophe Lewis, who is currently on parole, and the Prison Radio Show.
