An Intro to Technofeminism – How to Use (And Critique) Tech for Social Good

Presented by: Laine McCrory

Given the rapid pace of tech, it can be easy to get lost in the shuffle. As Big Tech corporations promote their motives, ordinary people are often ignored. In this workshop, participants will learn about what it means to build technology for social good. You will learn about the fundamentals of critiquing AI, algorithms and data, with a goal of demystifying the “black box” around tech. Participants will also help imagine what building tech from the “ground up” looks like. Join us to learn more about data justice and technology for the people!

Laine (she/her) is finishing her undergraduate degree at McGill University, and will be starting a Masters in Women and Gender Studies at University of Toronto in the Fall, where she will be researching feminist data justice principles. She is currently writing a thesis exploring the issues with techno solutions narratives in smart cities. Laine has also researched the sociopolitical implications of the AI industry in Montreal, and is a research assistant with the Just Feminist Tech and Scholarship Lab.
