Introduction to Canadian Imperialism

How much do you know about Canadian imperialism? Interested in learning more? Join QPIRG-McGill for our Intro to Canadian Imperialism: Workshop hosted by Tyler Shipley, professor and author of Canada in the World: Settler Capitalism and the Colonial Imagination. This workshop offers a deep dive into Canada’s international engagement since Confederation, providing an accessible introduction to its foundations. Throughout the workshop, we will explore key case studies that help us to see the continuity in Canadian policy, helping us to theorize how to struggle against it today.

The event is open to students, community members, or scholars interested in learning and discussed topics in Canadian imperialism. Snacks will be provided, and the lecturer will be on Zoom, while the rest of the workshop is in person.

Tyler Shipley is a professor of culture, society and commerce at Humber Polytechnic and author of Canada in the World: Settler Capitalism and the Colonial Imagination.

This event is part of Culture Shock 2024! Culture Shock is an annual event series on anti-racism, migrant justice, and Indigenous solidarity. It seeks to bring together racialized communities to discuss issues relevant to their lives, as well as to allow those who do not belong to these communities to learn more about struggles against racism, colonialism and border violence. Every year, QPIRG brings panels, workshops, film screenings, performance nights and fundraiser parties to McGill students and broader Montreal communities.

Culture Shock 2024 will take place from October 21st to 30th. For more information, visit qpirgmcgill.org/cs
